Treball final de Grau en Matemàtica Computacional. Codi: MT1030. Curs acadèmic 2014-2015Accelerator complexes require the collaboration of thousands of scientists and engineers to be able to build wonders like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and study all the information obtained with its operation. One of the key aspects for the operation of accelerators is the study of chargedparticle beam optics and dynamics. For instance, the simulation of single-particle trajectories is used to predict and optimize the long-term stability of particle beams inside an accelerator, which can take several hours or about 400 billion revolutions for the LHC. SixTrack is one of the codes used for simulating single-particle dynamics for the LHC and other accelerators. It has been in development for the past 25 years at CERN together with an ecosystem of pre- and post-processing tools (SixDesk) to prepare, launch and process the results of the simulations. This project contributes to SixTrack clarifying the theoretical foundations of the physics behind the post-processing, providing a reference for its code and rewriting part of SixDesk's post-processing routines with modern libraries and re-optimized algorithms together with a critical analysis of the decisions taken in the design process. The results consist in an improvement in term of analysis speed, a simpli cation of the code structure, a thorough documentation of the Fortran post-processing subroutines, the implementation of new features and an improvement in the exposition of the mathematical and physical methods behind the post-processing routines

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is generating Physics data at an unprecedented rate that is expected to continue increasing in the future. This situation results in increasing demands in computation and processing power for analyzing the LHC data. At the same time, modern architectures have switched from a sequential processing paradigm to a parallel one. In order to take full advantage of new computer architectures, to improve performance with increasing amounts of data to analyze, and to reduce development time and complexity, ROOT, the official LHC analysis framework, is undertaking a modernization effort to cope with the computational challenges posed by the ambitious physics program of the LHC. We contribute to this modernization effort by implementing patterns, introducing libraries and developing utilities for the parallelization of ROOT at multiple levels, improving the programming model and providing backward compatibility.

RDataFrame: Easy parallel ROOT analysis at 100 threads

    No full text
The Physics programmes of LHC Run III and HL-LHC challenge the HEP community. The volume of data to be handled is unprecedented at every step of the data processing chain: analysis is no exception. Physicists must be provided with first-class analysis tools which are easy to use, exploit bleeding edge hardware technologies and allow to seamlessly express parallelism. This document discusses the declarative analysis engine of ROOT, RDataFrame, and gives details about how it allows to profitably exploit commodity hardware as well as high-end servers and manycore accelerators thanks to the synergy with the existing parallelised ROOT components. Real-life analyses of LHC experiments’ data expressed in terms of RDataFrame are presented, highlighting the programming model provided to express them in a concise and powerful way. The recent developments which make RDataFrame a lightweight data processing framework are described, such as callbacks and I/O capabilities. Finally, the flexibility of RDataFrame and its ability to read data formats other than ROOT’s are characterised, as an example it is discussed how RDataFrame can directly read and analyse LHCb’s raw data format MDF

Dietary α-linolenic acid, marine ω-3 fatty acids, and mortality in a population with high fish consumption: Findings from the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) Study

12 Páginas.-- 6 Tablas.-- 1 FiguraBackground-Epidemiological evidence suggests a cardioprotective role of α-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-derived ω-3 fatty acid. It is unclear whether ALA is beneficial in a background of high marine ω-3 fatty acids (long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) intake. In persons at high cardiovascular risk from Spain, a country in which fish consumption is customarily high, we investigated whether meeting the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids recommendation for dietary ALA (0.7% of total energy) at baseline was related to all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. We also examined the effect of meeting the society's recommendation for long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (≥500 mg/day). Methods and Results-We longitudinally evaluated 7202 participants in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) trial. Multivariable-adjusted Cox regressionmodels were fitted to estimate hazard ratios. ALA intake correlated towalnut consumption (r=0.94). During a 5.9-y follow-up, 431 deaths occurred (104 cardiovascular disease, 55 coronary heart disease, 32 sudden cardiac death, 25 stroke). The hazard ratios formeeting ALArecommendation (n=1615, 22.4%) were 0.72 (95% CI 0.56-0.92) for all-causemortality and 0.95 (95% CI 0.58-1.57) for fatal cardiovascular disease. The hazard ratios formeeting the recommendation for long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n=5452, 75.7%) were 0.84 (95% CI 0.67-1.05) for all-causemortality, 0.61 (95% CI 0.39-0.96) for fatal cardiovascular disease, 0.54 (95% CI 0.29-0.99) for fatal coronary heart disease, and 0.49 (95% CI 0.22-1.01) for sudden cardiac death. The highest reduction in all-cause mortality occurred in participants meeting both recommendations (hazard ratio 0.63 [95% CI 0.45-0.87]). Conclusions-In participants without prior cardiovascular disease and high fish consumption, dietary ALA, supplied mainly by walnuts and olive oil, relates inversely to all-cause mortality, whereas protection from cardiac mortality is limited to fish-derived long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This study was funded in part by Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (Spanish Ministry of Economy) through grants RTIC G03/140, RTIC RD 06/0045, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares CNIC 06/2007, ISCIII FIS PS09/01292, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) AGL2010‐22319‐C03‐02 and AGL2009‐13906‐C02‐02, and an unrestricted grant from the California Walnut Commission.
